Software architecture foundations for PMs and designers — Part I

Ship with AI as part of a product team. Understand the architecture beneath your product — system diagrams, data layers, services, infrastructure, and engineering tradeoffs.

5 sessions · Beginner level · Free · by Lai-Jing Chu

AI has collapsed the distance between a product decision and production code — which means you’re increasingly expected not just to spec or design software, but to ship code and exercise technical judgment over what AI produces.

As a product manager, you might be able to ship features more easily than in the past — and still freeze the moment an engineer mentions “microservices,” “event-driven,” or “tech debt.”

This binder closes that knowledge gap. You’ll learn to read a system diagram, trace a change through the stack, ask the right architectural questions, and have smarter trade-off conversations with engineers.

What you will learn

  1. Read a basic architecture diagram.
  2. Trace how a product change affects the system.
  3. Spot technically cheap vs. expensive changes.
  4. Ask better questions in engineering reviews.
  5. Discuss architecture tradeoffs with engineers.

Who it is for

PMs and designers.

Who it is not for

  • Engineers looking for implementation depth.
  • PMs and designers who want to learn to code rather than understand architectural tradeoffs.

What it does not cover

  • HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Python and SQL.
  • Data modeling, async/events, and scaling tradeoffs — reserved for Part II.
  • Security, observability, and migration patterns — reserved for Part III.

Prerequisites

None.

Sessions

  1. Mental Models — Learn to read architecture diagrams and spot how system boundaries turn into product constraints.
  2. Data — Understand schemas and migrations so you can tell a small UI change from an expensive data change.
  3. Services — Read APIs as contracts and recognize how team boundaries become service boundaries.
  4. Shipping And Scaling — Trace how software reaches users and predict what success will cost your infrastructure.
  5. Working With Engineers — Use architectural literacy to make a real product call, write the decision memo, and ship it.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a binder?

A binder is a curated path through a complex topic, built from readings, videos, and a real project. Every resource is chosen deliberately, sequenced with intention, and annotated so you know why it’s there and how closely to engage with it. Each resource was thoughtfully made by someone and often carries a story — the binder creator is more like a docent guiding you through a gallery.

Most binders focus on workplace skills, but they don’t have to. A binder can also help you explore a creative practice, an intellectual question, or something you do simply to decompress.

Who is Syllabind for?

Syllabind is built for digital product designers and creatives who want to deepen their craft or acquire adjacent skills in product management, marketing, business, and engineering. It’s also for product managers, engineers, and other technical practitioners who want to improve their design craft and visual taste.

If you keep saving articles, buying books, or starting courses you never finish, you’re in the right place. Syllabind gives you a calm, completable route through the material — without adding another endless feed to your life.

What do I get from a binder?

You get a seminar-style syllabus of hand-picked resources, divided into manageable sessions. Each resource comes with a note explaining why it matters, what to look for, and whether it’s a “must,” “skim,” “inspo,” or “optional.”

You also get a project brief and rubric. The point isn’t to memorize the material. It’s to develop your own point of view and make something you can put in front of other people.

Do I have time for this?

Syllabind is designed for different levels of commitment. Binders are self-paced and take no more than eight weeks if you follow the full route. Every binder states the expected time commitment, and every resource and exercise has a time estimate. If you want more structure and accountability, join a live workshop, book an office hour, or connect with other learners through Slack. You can also share your progress on your public profile or post your work publicly (See Signature Project Award program).

You don’t have to complete every item to get value from a binder. Scan the overall structure, dip into the resources that interest you, or follow the “must” path when time is tight. The optional material will still be there when you want to go deeper.

Does Syllabind offer a subscription?

No. Signature binders are individually priced and sold as one-time purchases. Create a free account to preview the first session of any Signature binder before purchasing. Your purchase gives you lifetime access to that binder, including ongoing updates.

All non-Signature binders are free through 2026 for signed-up users.

What’s Syllabind’s Signature Project Award program?

Signature binders offer cash awards for excellent project work. If your completed project is selected for Syllabind’s Featured Projects section, you’ll receive the award stated in the relevant exercise brief. Award amounts vary by binder; for example, Ship Designs In Code With AI Without Losing Your Soul currently offers a $100 award. Each eligible exercise brief states the award and assessment criteria, so you know what excellent work looks like before submitting.

What’s the difference between Basic and Signature binders?

Basic binders are created by a human researcher with the help of AI. A human chooses the topic and framing, looks for good sources, and edits the finished binder, but doesn’t claim deep expertise in the subject. These binders often approach a familiar topic from an unexpected angle — full-stack software architecture for product designers, for example.

Signature binders are curated by someone with lived expertise in the subject. They go deeper, may include original worksheets or essays, and can offer direct access to the curator through office hours or project feedback.

Can I preview a binder before paying?

Yes. Create a free account to access every non-Signature binder for free through 2026 and preview the first session of any Signature binder. Purchase a Signature binder to continue beyond the first session.

Is there a live component or human feedback?

Yes, when you want it. Syllabind hosts live cohort workshops related to selected binder topics, although availability varies. Some Signature binders also offer 1:1 office hours with the curator.

Every binder includes a rubric for self-assessment or peer critique. For an additional fee, you can submit your project for detailed human review or book a one-hour office hour with the curator.

How is binder quality vetted?

Every publicly featured binder is reviewed against Syllabind’s Creator’s Handbook. The checklist looks for canonical and authoritative sources, competing perspectives rather than one tidy narrative, accurate links and metadata, a project grounded in action, and a rubric with a clear quality bar.

What is Syllabind’s refund policy?

Paid binders can be refunded within 24 hours of purchase. Email support@syllabind.com from the address used for the purchase, and we’ll refund you in full.

Workshops can be refunded within 14 days of purchase or any time before the second session starts — whichever gives you longer. A 1:1 session can be refunded within 14 days as long as it hasn’t happened yet. If you’re a consumer in the EU or UK, your statutory right to cancel still applies.
